Decades of Experience, Grounded in Human Connection
I have worked in the mental health field since 1995, helping people navigate challenges, reconnect with their strengths, and move toward greater balance and well-being.
Over the years, my work has drawn from a wide range of approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, EMDR, wilderness therapy, neurofeedback, biofeedback, and QEEG.
My Path to Counseling
My path into counseling was not a straight one.
I originally left college prepared for a career in journalism, motivated by a desire to better understand the world and contribute something meaningful to it. Over time, I realized that I wanted to be more directly involved in helping people create change in their own lives.
That realization led me to earn a master’s degree in human relations and counseling from the University of Oklahoma and begin my career as a helping professional in the mid-1990s.
The People & Places That Shaped My Work
My early work focused on helping adults with developmental disabilities build greater independence and fuller, more meaningful lives. Since then, I have had the privilege of working with people from many different backgrounds and life circumstances, each bringing their own strengths, struggles, histories, and hopes.
My career has taken me through community mental health, juvenile justice, private practice, and corporate health.
Connection Beyond the Traditional Therapy Office
Along the way, I discovered that some of the most meaningful therapeutic conversations do not necessarily happen in a traditional office.
In fact, my favorite “therapy office” has often been a log beside a campfire.
Again and again, I have seen how healing can grow through genuine human connection, a sense of belonging, and our relationship with the natural world.
Where Science & Human Connection Meet
At the same time, I have remained deeply interested in the ways science and technology can help us better understand ourselves.
My work in psychophysiology has given me opportunities to teach, present, mentor, contribute to research, advise on best practices, and participate in the development of software applications. I have also expanded my professional training through additional study in school counseling and addictions.
Bringing these different worlds together has become an important part of how I approach counseling. I value the insights that technology and evidence-informed therapies can offer while never losing sight of the importance of relationship, compassion, curiosity, and connection.
Helping You Find Your Own Way Forward
Of all the professional opportunities I have had, the work that remains most meaningful to me is sitting with another person, meeting them where they are, and helping them discover their own way forward.
My role is not to define that path for you, but to walk alongside you for part of the journey, offering the tools, experience, perspective, and support that may help you move toward the life you want to create.
