Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for every chapter.
Starting therapy often comes with questions.
Whether you're wondering how therapy works, what to expect during your first session, or how to know if it's the right time to reach out, you're not alone. Below are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
If you don't see what you're looking for, we'd be happy to help. Every story is different, and we're here to answer your questions with care.
-
Not at all.
Many people begin therapy long before they reach a crisis point. You might be feeling anxious more often than usual, navigating a major life transition, processing grief, struggling in a relationship, or simply noticing that life feels harder than it used to.
Therapy isn't only for life's most difficult moments- it's also a place to better understand yourself, strengthen relationships, build healthier coping strategies, and care for your emotional well-being before things become overwhelming.
-
If you've been asking yourself that question, therapy may already be worth exploring.
You don't need to have a diagnosis or know exactly what you want to work on. Many people begin therapy because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply curious about understanding themselves more deeply.
You don't need all the answers before reaching out. That's what we're here for.

Finding the right therapist is one of the most important parts of the therapy process.
At Trilogy Counseling Collective, we don't believe therapy is one-size-fits-all. Every member of our collective brings different specialties, personalities, lived experiences, and therapeutic approaches.
When you reach out, we'll take time to understand what you're looking for and thoughtfully recommend a therapist who feels like the right fit- not just someone who has the next available appointment.
-
Your first session is simply a conversation.
You'll have the opportunity to share what's bringing you to therapy, ask questions, and talk about what you hope to gain from the experience.
There's no pressure to tell your whole story in one session. Therapy happens at your pace, and your therapist will meet you with curiosity, compassion, and respect.
-
Yes.
We offer in-person therapy at our St. Joseph, Michigan office and secure virtual therapy for clients throughout Michigan.
Many clients appreciate the flexibility of online therapy, while others prefer meeting in person. Together, we'll find the option that works best for you.
-
For many concerns, research shows that virtual therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy.
Whether you choose online or in-person sessions often comes down to your comfort, schedule, and personal preferences. Both options offer meaningful opportunities for connection, healing, and growth.
-
Every person's needs are different.
Many clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a strong therapeutic relationship. As life changes and goals evolve, some people transition to biweekly or monthly appointments.
Your therapist will work with you to determine a pace that feels supportive and sustainable.
-
Yes.
We work with most insurance plans and also offer private-pay options.
If you have questions about coverage, our team is happy to help you understand your benefits before scheduling your first appointment.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide services to clients with Medicaid.
-
That's more common than you might think.
Many people worry they'll arrive at therapy without knowing where to begin. Your therapist will help guide the conversation through thoughtful questions, curiosity, and gentle exploration.
You don't have to come prepared.
You just have to come as you are.
-
That doesn't mean therapy isn't for you.
Sometimes the therapeutic approach wasn't the right fit. Sometimes it was the timing. Sometimes it was simply the relationship.
We believe the connection between therapist and client matters deeply. That's why we take care to help you find someone whose style and approach align with what you're looking for.
One experience doesn't have to define the next one.
-
There's no universal timeline.
Some people come to therapy for a specific season or challenge, while others appreciate ongoing support as they continue to grow.
Therapy is a collaborative process, and together you'll decide what feels most helpful based on your goals.
-
Yes.
